Green Lights School of Motoring

Choosing an ADI is never easy

Finding a good Driving Instructor (ADI) can be fraught with danger. As a learner driver, you really have no idea who is good and who is not so good. Undoubtedly the best course of action is to go to someone by personal recommendation. If your friends were happy with this ADI, there is a good chance you will be.

If you really don't know anyone who can recommend someone, it's down to pot luck and the local directories. You may like to consider the following points:

The biggest mistake people make when phoning up an instructor is before anything else, they utter the immortal words "How much do you charge"

If you must ask this question! You really have to decide what is most important to you. Quality or price. It boils down to the old saying - "You pay peanuts, you get a monkey". If the average going rate is £19 per hour, you must ask yourself why someone is only charging £15 per hour. Is it because they are not very good and simply can't generate business? They are certainly not generating a reasonable profit at that price and consequently, are they really going to give you a quality service?.

Why choose Green Lights School of Motoring?

Well, it's rare that anyone other than an Approved Driving Instructor will have the training and knowledge to provide you with the skills to drive safely
ADIs are trained to a very high standard and have taken and passed a complex theory test, an advanced driving test and a strict test of teaching abilities

How are ADIs graded?

  • Fully qualified ADIs must take further regular tests, known as check tests. During a "live" driving lesson an ADI is examined by a Senior Examiner employed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
  • Check tests are supposed to maintain the quality of driving instruction
  • The quality is defined by the Driving Standards Agency
  • At the end of a check test an ADI is graded according to ability. An Examiner will use his or her skill to decide the grade for the Instructor!
  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 4
  • Grade 5
  • Grade 6

So why choose Green Lights?

  • Because most of our instructors are either A Grade 6 or have been trained by a Grade 6
  • All tuition is conducted on a one to one basis by our fully qualified instructors
  • We will make your lessons as enjoyable as possible
  • We are always committed to offering the very best tuition
  • We are a very modern driving school. And offer male and female instructors
  • We have several cars. All fitted with dual controls, most of which have air conditioning

What do the Grades mean?

  • Grade 6 "Overall performance to a very high standard"
  • Less than 7% of all ADIs are Grade 6
  • There are about 29,300 ADIs on the ADI register
  • Not all ADIs teach full time
  • Some have full time jobs and teach to supplement their income, others are retired and teach to supplement their pension
  • Many teach full time
  • Some ADIs specialize in driver instructor training

Qualified or Trainee?

  • Qualified ADIs display a GREEN licence on their car windscreen
  • PDIs display a PINK licence, PDIs have not taken the final qualifying ADI test
ADIs and PDIs must if, they are giving paid tuition, display their licence by law
  • It is an offence to give driving tuition for gain and not be a registered ADI or PDI

How do I choose?

  • Grade
  • Reliability
  • Punctuality
  • Reputation "find out more"
  • The tuition car
  • Try not to be guided either by price or unique driving and teaching techniques
  • If it sounds too good to be true
  • Then it probably is

It is true to say that the most expensive is not always the best and the cheapest is not always the worst, however it is extremely unlikely that you will find a higher grade ADI offering cheap driving tuition "You Really do get what you pay for in this industry"
